Needham Varsity Football 1979

The Needham 300 Committee is collecting your football memories from decades gone by to create a documentary film to be shown at Needham’s 300th Birthday Kick-off celebration. Shown above is the NHS varsity team 1979.

Submitted by the Needham 300 Committee:

Remember the game in November when the mud on the field was so deep that the players were stuck at mid field battling it out.  The infamous game play on snow and ice when Needham took over the field with a strong ground attack and beat Wellesley 17 -0.

That’s what the Needham 300 Committee is looking for. Memories and memorabilia from Needham football players, coaches and spectators that will be turned into a documentary film slated to be shown at Needham’s 300th Birthday Kick off Celebration.

Do you have a story to tell? A scrap book filled with newspaper clippings? Old videos?  8 millimeter film? Reel to reel? Does the trunk in your attic hold any old football memorabilia? Shirts? Helmets?  We welcome your football memories in any form.

We’re also looking for Needham’s oldest football player. (Don’t worry; we won’t reveal your age!) We’d love to hear your tales of Needham’s early days on the field. Coaches, we need to hear from you, too.

The Needham-Wellesley Thanksgiving Day rivalry that has been going on since 1882 (ever since East and West Needham split apart and took their forever divided teams with them) is sure to prompt a few good tales.

We can’t tell you that our film will win an Oscar, or be nominated for an Emmy. But we can tell you that with Needham Football in the spotlight – rich with personal memories, town spirit and 300th Birthday pride, it’s sure to be a winner.

To share your football memories, please call Kathy Walker at 781 449-5023 or email her at walkerkb@rcn.com . You can send pictures to 1552 Great Plain Ave, Needham, MA 02492. (All photos and memorabilia will be return to its owner)  The deadline to receive materials is Aug. 15 so “get on the ball.”
